Some of Brisbane’s most vulnerable residents will receive a sweet surprise this Easter thanks to the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said more than 3,400 chocolate eggs will be donated to residents in need through the Trust’s Easter Grants Round this year.
Cr Schrinner said the eggs will be distributed through 17 local charities who care for residents impacted by homelessness, disability, domestic violence, and illness.
“While the holidays are a great time to gather families together and celebrate, they can be really hard on people who are doing it tough,” he said.
“Thankfully, the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust supports incredible grass roots charities who work tirelessly to make the holidays a little sweeter for children and families experiencing hardship.
“This year, we are providing our largest Easter egg donation to date, to help families provide some treats, even when budgets are tight.”
For the first time, the Easter donations will also include cash grants for organisations to put on special Easter meal service for the homeless. These additional funds will ensure that more residents will receive a warm meal over the holiday period.
The Easter Grant Round adds to the $159,000 donation provided to 21 Brisbane charities in March, through the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust’s first grant round of the year.
“Rising living costs are impacting lots of people but are particularly difficult for the vulnerable people in our community,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Our people are what makes our city great and supporting individuals and families doing it tough is always a top priority.”
Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust Nina Schrinner said more than 42,000 chocolate eggs had been donated to residents since the Easter Grant Round began in 2007.
“It can be difficult for people to reach out and ask for help when times are tough, especially during the holidays” Ms Schrinner said.
“While providing chocolate eggs may seem like a small gesture, it’s one that eases the burdens on parents and carers and spreads joy to residents of all ages during hard times.”
Helen Crew from Childhood Cancer Support said this donation will make all the difference for the children and families in their care.
“Our families come from regional areas of Queensland and spend many months away from their loved ones, so they miss out on special celebrations with family and friends back home,” she said.
“To be able to see a beautiful smile on the faces of our sick children undergoing cancer treatment and their siblings by providing them with simple pleasures such as Easter Eggs makes such a difference for our families.”
