Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has unveiled the new-look Manly Harbour Village which is part of his Council’s $11 million investment into revitalising suburban shopping strips.
Cr Schrinner said the $890,000 Manly Harbour Village Precinct Project was designed and completed in close consultation with local residents to help boost trade in surrounding small businesses.
“Our Village Precinct Projects are important investment into those local shopping precincts that residents know and love,” he said.
“Not only do Village Precinct Projects improve the appeal of these important local retail strips, they help attract more customers and give businesses a boost.
“The Manly community were very involved in the revitalisation of their village and residents outlined the need for a new foreshore plaza with more greenery and more seating to take in the beautiful bay views.
“We’ve also added new street furniture, bike racks and artworks to help activate this space for both day and night and make it easier for visitors wanting to enjoy takeaway from the fantastic local eateries.
“Suburban hubs like Manly Harbour Village are the beating hearts of neighbourhoods and offer a different experience to visiting a major shopping centre.
“This project has also been completed just in time for the Christmas rush to help lure new visitors to the bayside.”
Local Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins was engaged to create the projection artworks, which embraced Manly as a seaside destination.
“Nighttime in this space offers the unique experience of local indigenous artwork, telling the story of Manly through a light display,” she said.
“Each of the four projections in the artwork series tells part of a story about Manly.”
The four projections includes Tawalpin, the Jandai name for Cotton Tree, which grows along the Quandamooka coastline and beyond, From the Hills to the Bay signifiying the layers of Country in the hills down to the water’s edge, Quandamooka Sea Life representing the yungan (dugong) and bunbiya (turtle) active in the bay, and Along the Foreshore depicting the mudflats, mangroves and all life forms which live within this important eco-system.
Cr Schrinner said the Manly Harbour Village was one of 10 Village Precinct Projects planned over the next four years.
“Projects to improve local strips in Ashgrove West, Paddington Terraces, Martha Street in Camp Hill and Coorparoo Junction are underway,” he said. “And we look forward to getting started on Aminya Street in Mansfield, Sandgate Road, Boondall and Park Road, Milton shortly.”
To celebrate the completion of Manly Harbour’s new foreshore plaza, Council is hosting a ‘Light Up Manly’ event soon, in association with local traders.
The COVID-safe event will feature music and a nautically themed lantern display along the foreshore.
