Brisbane residents and visitors will be able to jump on one of 800 sharable electric bikes from next month.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced Neuron Mobility and Beam Mobility had been awarded the tender to operate Brisbane’s new sharable electric bike scheme and shareable e-scooters which will meet booming demand for the new form of transport.
“We have listened to Brisbane residents and will be expanding the electric offering, with 2000 e-scooters and 800 e-bikes to be available from 22 July,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Brisbane has been a leader in e-mobility. Following a competitive tender process Neuron and Beam were chosen for their strong track record and commitment to safety and sustainability.
“Every single person who jumps on an e-scooter or e-bike is one less car on our road, so this initiative is busting congestion and building a more sustainable Brisbane.
“We look forward to the purple and orange bikes being available for residents and visitors, along with the expanded e-scooter fleet.
“It’s never been easier to leave the car at home, and travel quickly, safely and sustainability to your destination.”
Public and Active Transport Chair Ryan Murphy said the announcement of the new operators coincided with the adoption of the Schrinner Council’s e-mobility strategy.
“We’re very proud that our e-mobility strategy is the first of its kind in the world, and as we continue to expand our suite of e-mobility options, it will help integrate this new form of transport into Brisbane as smoothly as possible,” Cr Murphy said.
“The strategy details actions that will ensure e-mobility devices can operate safely and effectively in our city and illustrates how Council will maintain world’s best practice in managing e-mobility going forward.
“Over 900 individuals and stakeholder groups provided feedback on our strategy; raising issues like safety and infrastructure, so the strategy includes key actions such as speed limits in pedestrian areas, late-night e-scooter lockouts, safety initiatives, e-mobility parking areas and better consideration for charging facilities.
“More than just safety and infrastructure, we know that about 1 in 5 e-scooter trips in Brisbane ends in a purchase, which shows us that e-mobility is becoming increasingly important for the local economy.
“The Schrinner Council has a clear vision for Brisbane and a key part of it is to create an active and connected city that is easily walkable and rideable.
“With new e-bikes, e-scooters and green bridges we are continuing to deliver on this vision every day, and it will only get better in the future.”
The CityCycle fleet is gradually being phased out during the transition to e-bikes.
Beam and Neuron will roll out their electric fleet of e-bikes and e-scooters from 22 July.
